    General contractors and site planners calculate overall pricing based on regional liquid asphalt binder indices, aggregate hauling distance, and native soil stability. For a standard 600-square-foot residential layout, total project costs generally range from $2,400 to $4,800, though unstable ground or heavy excavation can push quotes higher.

    If you only do one thing: Specify a minimum 6-inch compacted crushed aggregate base (dense-graded stone or aggregate base course) beneath 2.5 to 3 inches of compacted hot-mix asphalt to prevent rutting.

    • Subgrade Excavation & Grading ($1.50–$3.00/sq ft): Earthwork involves stripping 8 to 10 inches of unsuitable organic soil, shaping grade lines for runoff, and compacting native subgrade to 95% standard Proctor density.
    • Crushed Stone Sub-Base ($1.50–$2.50/sq ft): Crews install and mechanically vibrate 6 to 8 inches of 3/4-inch minus crushed aggregate in two separate lifts to eliminate voids and establish a frost-resistant foundation.

    • Slope and Drainage Standards: Pavement requires a finished cross-slope of 1.5% to 2.0% (at least 1/4 inch of fall per linear foot) to direct rainwater away from structural edges into proper swales.
    • Watch out for: Paving directly over severe alligator cracking or saturated subgrades, which triggers rapid reflective cracking and subgrade pumping within 12 months.
    • Watch out for: Installing asphalt when ambient or surface temperatures drop below 50°F, which cools thin mats too quickly for rollers to achieve target 92% to 97% compaction density.
    • Watch out for: Skipping geotextile separation fabric over clay soils, allowing fine silt particles to migrate into the aggregate base and compromise load-bearing capacity.

    Schedule a proof-roll inspection with a loaded tandem-axle truck or dynamic cone penetrometer across the compacted stone base before asphalt delivery to verify zero surface deflection.
